A log home in the South has to do more than look good on move-in day. It has to stand up to driving rain, wet ground, humid summers, insects, and years of expansion and contraction. So, what makes cypress decay resistant? The answer starts inside the tree itself, but long-term performance also depends on selecting the right wood and building the home correctly.

For generations, cypress has earned its reputation as one of the best woods for wet, demanding climates. That reputation is not sales talk. What Makes Cypress Decay Resistant?

Cypress is naturally durable because its heartwood contains extractives – naturally occurring compounds that help the tree resist fungi, moisture-related decay, and many insect threats. The home design should suit the site as well. If the building lot has low areas, heavy shade, or poor drainage, those conditions need attention early. A beautiful floor plan cannot overcome a foundation area that holds water after every storm.
